I started my career in counselling and psychological therapy in 2003 with Kids Help Line (KHL), a counselling service for children and young people run by Boystown. I worked primarily with adolescents on developmental issues such as managing friends and family relationships, school work, mental health issues (i.e., typically anxiety and depression) and alcohol or other drug use that adolescents often experiment with at this stage of life. This work also included liaison with police or child protection services where issues of concern regarding child safety were raised.
Over the five years I worked with KHL I gained substantial experience counselling clients in remote areas over the telephone and internet. My work with KHL also included three years with Parent Line, a service founded to help parents manage common challenges raising children and adolescents. This counselling work included the assessment and management of challenging behaviours in young people through the use of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program.
In 2008 I moved on to work with Queensland Health as a psychologist in several hospitals and community based mental health services. Between 2008 and 2009 I worked at The Park – Centre for Mental Health (formerly known as Wolston Park Hospital) in the High Secure section with mentally ill offenders. This work included the provision of individual therapy to inpatients, cognitive assessment (e.g., intellectual and memory assessments) and assessment of risk and likelihood of recidivism for inpatients upon their release.
In 2009 I moved to the Ipswich Adult Integrated Mental Health Service (IMHS) where I worked as a case manager in metropolitan and rural communities for patients living with a lifelong mental illness such as Schizophrenia or Bi-Polar Disorder. This work assisted those living with a chronic mental illness to live independently in the community. My work with IMHS also included a six month secondment to the Crisis Assessment and Therapy Team (CATT), which conducted assessments of members of the community that were experiencing an active period of mental illness and who required specialist psychiatric assessment and treatment.
In early 2011 I commenced work as a clinical psychologist with OGI Potential. I provide psychotherapy to men and women aged 18 and over on a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, substance use, anger management, relationships and sexual functioning amongst many other areas.
Area of special interest
I have a particular interest in conflict resolution and working with couples whose relationships are in distress. My focus is on cutting through the muddy waters of relationship conflict to identify the deeper issues that maintain a couple’s arguments. Personally, I gain a tremendous sense of purpose and meaning as I work with couples to resolve their differences, and to re-create the love and closeness they once enjoyed. I find there is nothing more satisfying professionally than ending therapy after firstly identifying the deeper causes to a couple’s problems, and then creating a new communication style for the couple to resolve their disputes. Knowing that I have played a role in improving the quality of a couple’s relationship, or perhaps even saving the couple from separation gives me the motivation to keep developing myself as a therapist and to strive to provide the answers that my future client couples seek.
